  •  Interesting diary, Adam. (15+ / 0-)

These trade treatises sometimes have unexpected consequences.  NAFTA drive small producers of corn off the land when Mexico was flooded with Iowa (and other states') corn, leading to a massive exoudus of these folks form Mexico to the United States, creating some of the immigration issues we face today.

    •  bananas in Costa Rica (0+ / 0-)

When we first went to Costa Rica in the 80's, we were sad to see bananas were outrageously expensive.  They were all being shipped to the US, thanks United Fruit Company.

This is an earlier, like sugar or corn, that the locals suffered at the needs to the US.

      •  Red Delicous Apples (0+ / 0-)

I was once given a box of top grade red delicous apple by a armer who grew them. They were everything their name says, practically melted in my mouth. Tey were nothing like the ones we get here from the store.

The reason is the same the best ones command a high price in Japan where they slice them up and eat them with toothpicks as a delicacy or so I have been told. The farmer told me these aplles sell or $20 a pound there so we are stuck eating their tough skinned relations.............

Apple, but now it seems to be Fuji.  Odd, if what you say is true, but we don't buy RD anymore cause they taste terrible.
