  •  I'm glad someone brought this point up! (12+ / 0-)

    You nailed it!

If the Dems had spent that same amount -- $30 million -- we probably would have more state houses run by Dems and a Democratic House.

    •  The thing is that it's really embarrassing, (13+ / 0-)

I think, because we've lost state houses in states that are much bluer than the state governments now suggest that they are.

WTF is a Republican doing in the Governor's mansion in Michigan, for instance?  Ohio?  Wisconsin?

The Democrats have abandoned or screwed up their state-level political machines even in important swing states and in states that are really much more blue than red (whether they know it or not) which seems even more ridiculous to me.

Please note: I say "whether they know it or not" because in the absence of a 50-state strategy for the party (not just Obama) voters don't even know they have a choice.

And we can't keep relying on the Republicans continuing to put up obviously crazy and screwed up candidates.  That's going to stop soon and our fights to win anything are going to get tougher.

Every time I get mail from the New York State Democratic Committee I grouse about Sheldon Silver and throw out the envelope unopened.  But frankly the Democratic political machine in NY does not have a pristine reputation around money.

I would prefer a national organization intelligently allocating funds to target specific state house races in all 50 states.  I would definitely donate to that.  What Is Howard Dean up to these days anyway?

        •  He's marginalized along with most of the (10+ / 0-)

other more populist, grass-roots minded Democrats in the party.

One of the really big problems in the political world is the group-think mentality.  People begin to believe that because a president wins with a swing state strategy, that's THE strategy for all of the party political initiatives.  That problem is compounded with the multitude of Southern states in which they hold open primaries which makes it really difficult for a real progressive to win anywhere - what happens is that in the primaries the conservatives vote for the most whacked out unacceptable Dem candidate (some of whom are funded by the conservatives like Clare McCaskill did with Aikn) and then they run effectively unopposed.

The only way to break the cycle of those kinds of primary problems is to spend a lot of time and money locally.  The challenge there is that with the exception of a couple of years in the past ten, it has been decades since Democrats have been down in those states.  Also, in the rare moments that we do win a seat in those states we also are often dealing with a Republican calling himself a "Blue Dog" - but that's not always because the actual people are super conservative in those districts - it is because the machine is set up to produce nothing but conservative choices.

Anyway, at the very least we shouldn't be getting our asses kicked in the bluer states at the state level the way we have lately.  It is an embarrassment.
