    At least somewhat. I was a kid and the Uhura character was an integral part of the crew. She was a Lieutenant who did her job well and seemed like a good person. Just as I was too young to appreciate the miniskirts, I was too young to appreciate how groundbreaking the role was for an African-American actor. Hell, I respected her on the bridge of that ship as much as any of them. The fact that she had dark skin never entered into my appraisal of her one way or the other.

    And maybe that was what was so good about it. People being people without race or skin color entering into the equation at all.

      that people of all colors and ethnicities, even a certifiable alien, interacted without any notice of their outward differences, that each was differentiated by their inner abilities, Spock's logic, Kirk's leadership, Uhura's communication skills...
      And it didn't hurt that Uhura was gorgeous!

      If I ran this circus, things would be DIFFERENT!
