    the other day on the "turn the other cheek" verse that gives it a cultural context and a meaning very different from how we've been interpreting it.  I did not know at the time that this would be so meaningful, so I did not take note of where I heard it or who said it, and I greatly regret that now.

    But it was explained that the custom at that time (and I understand in some places is still the custom) one hand is used for "dirty" work such as cleaning oneself or touching a slave, who were considered subhuman at that time.  Therefore if a person slapped you with that hand you turned the other cheek to the person -- saying, in effect, "Go ahead, slap me again, but you'll have to recognize my humanity to do so."
