  •  Not sure if an SVP tag will be enough (5+ / 0-)

If Biron hadn't taken her out of the country, then maybe--and it's an awfully big maybe--I'd be comfortable with less than 40 years.  But a sentence that assures Biron dies in prison is, to my mind, necessary to help that girl heal.

    •  In effect the civil commitment is a life sentence (3+ / 0-)

In MN a sexually dangerous person is committed for treatment. In effect the indefinite commitment is a life sentence to a forensic psychiatric facility.

      •  I'm somewhat skeptical of civil commitment (1+ / 0-)

if only because I'm not entirely certain it's constitutional.  If someone is too dangerous to ever be allowed to live among us again, then impose a sentence that ensures he or she dies in prison.

If you're going to tag someone as a sexually violent predator, do it the way Pennsylvania does it.   If you're tagged with that status there, you have to report your address to the police every three months and be in court-approved counseling for the rest of your life.

Definitely has some issues for "what you might do."

After 15 years I think there has been  1 provisional discharge from the Mn Sex Offender Program.

I think we both agree that there needs to be long term confinement in case similar to this incident. Mandating treatment within corrections as a confition of release is perfectly appropriate.

This a person with terribly disturbed behaviors and attitudes that may well have been the product of her childhood.
