  •  I had my own gun fail years ago (9+ / 0-)

When I was about 7 years old, I was over at a friend's house. This was rural Ohio in the 60s by the way. We found his Dad's shotgun, and my friend decided to show off by demonstrating how to load it. He subsequently decided that the only way to avoid getting in trouble was to get the ammo out of the gun, and the only way to do that was to shoot it.
We stacked up three feather pillows in a small closet that abutted a closet on the other side of the wall. Then we stood in the closet, pointed the gun at the pillows and pulled the trigger. The recoil of the gun sent us both flying against the closet wall; the bullet(s) went right through the pillows, through the closet wall, and hit a case of coke in old-fashioned bottles on the other side.
My friend's father heard a shot, came running toward the sound, only to be confronted with a dark puddle forming by the closet door. He started screaming and opened the door to see us sprawled against the wall with the feathers still settling.
The parents were so shook up I don't even remember getting in trouble. I do know that I never saw another gun lying around my friend's house again.

To keep our faces turned toward change, and behave as free spirits in the presence of fate--that is strength undefeatable. (Helen Keller)
