If Christie runs as a moderate - being more moderate than the rest of the field isn't hard to do - he'll have a lot of territory all to himself. Everyone else will be fighting each other trying to show that they are more extreme than the next.

They will be attempting to tear each other down, and tear him down as well. But when they attack him, it strengthens his moderate credentials. And he could get the nomination just from having the extremist vote divided several ways.

In any case, the 2016 GOP nomination fight should be interesting. I suspect that the GOP will only continue to grow more and more extreme between now and then.

    •  the "moderates" in 2012 (0+ / 0-)

were Mitt "Severely Conservative" Romney, and Huntsman and Pawlenty (both of whom were non-factors).

That space that was available in '12 will still be there, waiting to be claimed in '16.

Romney tried as hard as he could to scrub himself of any taint of moderation, even going so far as to run away from Romneycare.

Pawlenty, too, tried to scrub himself of any taint of moderation.

Huntsman was the only one who tried to be a moderate. But it seemed that no one heard of him. Pawlenty at least had his name register slightly on the public consciousness. If Christie tries to run as a moderate, he's not going to have any name recognition problems. They wouldn't bother attacking Christie if they didn't fear him. Running as a moderate is Christie's only chance.

    •  He will also poll like Huntsman (0+ / 0-)

Unless the party starts radically readjusting how it's functioning, starting with Congress, like, yesterday, Christie will be a pariah in the primaries. Unless of course HE embraces the kind of heartless obstructionism guys like Ryan and Can'tor thrive on.
