marked clearly enough and the obvious historical points made. My dad was 3 when Grandpa C died in '28, leaving an amazing woman with 4 children, ages 3 - 9. She owned the 2 room bungalow and  enough land for a big garden, milk cow and, outhouse. No running water in the house. Back porch had a water pump and was closed in as  the kitchen. KC MO area.

She did get 'assistance' from people she didn't share her conservative opinions with for fear of not being eligible :)

And they had very little even with that. Dad's illustrative story was having his pants taken one day when he was being punished and the rest were going out. So, he got in her sewing basket, got his OTHER pair of pants, mended them and took off.

Those of us who think it is not a bad idea to point out how much the New Deal improved poverty, and how bad it STILL was when RFK went to Appalachia and other places in the 60's, would endorse a graph, well explained, with that big jump in the 30's and rather steady increase in the 60's. Ideally correlated to other issues that improved.  Clearly not done in this one, or attempted, for the obvious reasons.

Thom Hartmann often does something like it in talking about the long history of labor, health care, etc. One of the things I would like to see on these charts is US population. Kinda changes the lens we are looking through.

Great diary, had to be tough, thanks.
