  •  Check his assets (12+ / 0-)

Hate to say it but a civil suit might get you nothing but internal satisfaction. if he's got some sgtuff, itd be worth it to get a lawyer---if notm, just pursue the max the Small clamis court can do. Yu can make his life miserable for quite a while if youre that kind of person.
I think you don't ever want this person to come back and make thingss right, he obviously doesn't know whats right.
I'd pursue it because I'm a sonofabitch and know the law.
I used to have a sideline documenting this kind of thing and helping  people prepare for suits.
I'vd done a lot of fixup work that other contractors left, and always thought---"how come no one ever let me get away with anything?"
    good luck, stay in touch

    •  thank you for the advice (9+ / 0-)

lawsuits suck, no matter what side you're on, and would only pursue as a last resort.

Had a thought about what the IRS might do if his accounting was brought into question.  I mean, he got the money, but didn't deliver materials or services.

I'd gladly do that out of spite, and see if I can suss out some sort of intent not to complete as there were communications and contracts and transfer of funds across state lines.  Father in law isn't as sharp as he used to be, but he might be able to get advice from where he used to work as an Asst. US Attorney for Eastern District of New York.

I see a very beautiful planet that seems very inviting and peaceful. Unfortunately, it is not.…We're better than this. We must do better. Cmdr Scott Kelley
