  •  Violent crimes (6+ / 0-)
The UK violent rate of 2034 per 100,000.
        Australia 1677 per 100,00.
        South Africa 1,609 per 100,000
Austria is not Australia. Australia has among the lowest crime rate in the world.

I'm curious about this one aspect of your article (since I used to live in Australia and was shocked to learn from your quote that it had one of the highest violent crime rates in the world) so I checked on its source:

In Britain, an affray is considered a violent crime, while in other countries it will only be logged if a person is physically injured.
There are also degrees of violence. While the UK ranks above South Africa for all violent crime, South Africans suffer more than 20,000 murders each year - compared with Britain's 921 in 2007.
That's all I have time to check. Sometimes a very very very long list of stuff is merely a way to intimidate other people from responding. A kind of throwing mucho mud on the wall and hoping nobody could deflect it all and so some of it will stick.

Just that one aspect of REPORTED crime rates will take a long discussion. For example, if a husband slaps his wife whether she reports it or not depends on how much she needs the husband to survive after the divorce if she reports it and whether they accept it as normal. So, that, in turn, depends on the social welfare structure of the country and the national culture.

Anyway, why are violent crimes (such as affrays in the UK) cited in the context of assault weapons ban to reduce mass murders ? Are you trying to argue that the assault weapons in a household will somehow reduce domestic violence.

That makes me curious about the relationship between domestic violence and reported violent crime rates. I guess this detailed report from the San Jose Police Department can be as good as any to show what are really going on behind those numbers. Some noteworthy numbers:
    - Total reported violent crimes : 334.4 (per 100,000)
    - Total reported domestic violence : 2252
    - Total domestic violence with weapons : 326 (1)
    (1) weapons only include the use of hand/fist/feet when it causes aggravated injury
So, padding the reported domestic crime rates with assaults which do not cause any aggravated injury can increase it by 8 times.
In other words, in plain language, a lot of numbers can be bullshit if they are not comparing apples to apples.
Some of the statements are nonsensical as well despite the authoritative numbers and tone but I don't really have time to go into those. As I said, when people are throwing a lot of stuff maybe they just want to confuse and overwhelm rather to look for a conversation.
I'm out. This is all I have time for.
