  •  Most docs opposed anesthesia for childbirth (4+ / 0-)

on theological grounds -- because the Bible says God told Eve "in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children," so it's supposed to hurt. (There are of course good reasons to avoid anesthesia if possible -- to keep chemicals out of the baby's bloodstream -- but that's a different issue from gratuitous suffering because God wants you to suffer.)

    •  I chose an unmedicated birth and was lucky (1+ / 0-)

      to have two of them.

I think the medical establishment overused anesthesia during the 50s through 70s to keep women compliant and speed along the birth - take control and move it along for the comfort of the medical staff.

      •  It depends on how your labor goes (0+ / 0-)

I too did natural childbirth with both kids, but my labors we about 7 hours each.  If I'd gone over 12 like some folks I know I might have changed my mind.

        •  I went to about 14 hours with my first (0+ / 0-)

          with 2.5 hours of pushing.

With my second, I was in labor all night, every night, for 5 days before he was born. On Day 6, the labor didn't stop and he was born that afternoon, after about 15 minutes of pushing.

It isn't the time it takes, but the progress you make :-)
