    Many of the early English novelists were themselves printers and typographers (the best way to have freedom of the press is to own one).

    Early printing was legal printing, newspapers, and religious tracts. I see the early novel, often satiric, as being a joke about this: inventing stories, to be printed up, wasn't really all that Novel. All printing was fiction.
