  •  We need to (9+ / 0-)

lower the retirement age to 60, 55 for the diminished pay-out. Bring Medicare in line with that. This would get the Baby Boom demographic bulge largely out of the job market (nobody's hiring older workers anyway), enabling more younger people to get work. Raise the income cap to $450,000 (which the Republicans consider 'middle class') in order to pay for it.

We all knew the demographic bulge was going to be a bitch when the time came, that's why Boomers have paid more into the fund since the 1980s. But of course, this would make too much sense to ever sell in D.C.

which would shore up that program for ever, and save everyone not an insurance company a ton of money.

      •  I'd sure love to see that happen (1+ / 0-)

in my lifetime, but I'm not confident it will. The 'repopulation' effort following WWII led to the biggest demographic bulge the world has ever seen, not all of us are dying before retirement (but enough of us are to have shrunk the bulge by a little bit). Starving and/or euthanizing us at this point certainly doesn't seem fair in return for our lifelong contributions to the world/nation. Fair isn't something Americans seem to know much about.

Universal health care is the LEAST we could do as a supposed world superpower to ensure domestic tranquility and such, but this country doesn't seem to value its citizens as the means and reason for its existence the way others do. It works for the oligarchy, not the people, and that's never going to change until and unless there is an upper limit on the accumulation of wealth and a lower limit on the means of survival.

Just not as evolved as we like to think we are, I guess.
