    I've never belonged to a church, or any other organized religious organization, so I don't have a frame of reference for your experience.

    It sounds like they were incredibly supportive of you at a most difficult time.  I'm not sure I have that kind of community that would rally around me if I was in similar straits.

    At various times I've been very involved in my neighborhood--that's a good place to start.  Knowing your neighbors is an easy first step, and those connections can be strong.  For various reasons i don't have that right now, and I miss those days.

    But the thing that has brought me the most joy and helped me make lasting connections (and I'm not one who reaches out or connects with people easily), is volunteering.  I've been with one organization in multiple capacities for years.  As I consider the next step in my life, which may involve relocation, I find those ties some of the hardest to sever.

    There is no snooze button on a cat who wants breakfast.
