with the bathwater on these diaries.  I've participated in a few of them over the past few days, and sure, I've seen some stupid personal remarks made, but those threads are pretty easy to spot and I avoid them.  We haven't had a national discussion on guns in a really long time, and these diaries help me to brush up on what the different points of view are.  They help me to hone my own opinions and help greatly in any discussions I have about this outside DKos.

Pettty comments and name calling add nothing to my knowledge of the subject, so I skip them.  For our newer participants, here's a good way to flag that kind of thing -  when you see a huge string of comment replies, such that the text is getting squished farther and farther to the right of the page,  either someone has come up with a very new and exciting thought, or a pie fight has broken out.  Usually the comment titles will give you a hint, but you can simply read one of the comments and find out.  If it's a pie fight, just skip the thread.

      Generally stay away.

110 recs but 480+ comments? Dead in the water.

Id o go in to see who HR's the tip jar because that tells me who the most ideologically driven are.

The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men.

diaries too, because sure as shootin' if there's some crazy argument being made here, I'm going to hear it from a non-DKos source as well, and it's best not to be surprised when someone says it to your face.
