and though the average cop on the beat does not carry a firearm, there are Authorised Firearms Officers, who have more training in the use and handling of firearms.

Sheer geographic size of the US would make that financially unfeasible - but I do support a much higher training standard here, including much tighter psychological testing.

I'm not a cop hater by any means.  I just think that bad cops and the command structure that allows them to continue to be cops can do disproportionately more damage in relation to their actual numbers and pose a significant threat to the well being of the community they serve.

    •  Agreed, but why can't we financially afford it? (1+ / 0-)

Tax breaks for the 1%, failure to enforce the drugs laws equally?  Under asset forfeiture laws we could have seized most, if not all of HSBC's properties and profits.

They have over $2 trillion in assets, imagine how many teachers, police and bridges we could have!

I am also very, very uneasy about the police state direction we're heading towards including its militarization with every podunk municipality receiving DHS grants for new toys but with no oversight or enhanced training.

They've been given hammers, now every problem looks like a nail, and we're seeing it's effect.

People who say their afraid of their government aren't necessarily referring to Washington DC, they're talking about their community's law enforcement.
