  •  let's be honest about golf and Phil Mickelson (8+ / 0-)

golf is a game. And no matter how "tough" and competitive golf is, the bottom line is that golf is a game. Like football, basketball and the other major sports, these guys should remember that they are privileged to play a game and make huge sums of money doing it.

Phil Mickelson had a mediocre to terrible year last year. Yet, he raked in over $48 million. Yet, he has the nerve to complain about taxes. But, I must give Phil Mickelson his due, as soon as he put his foot in his mouth, he recognized it and apologized immediately.

We, the citizens of the United States, need to recognize that we are subsidizing all of these guys. Whether it is football or baseball or basketball or golf, a large portion of the multimillion dollar salaries is actually coming from our taxes. All of the stadiums, we paid for. Golf, has a particularly American loophole, where the owners of these golf courses can write off a large portion of their property development. (Read David Cay Johnston's Free Lunch for details)

By all reports, Phil Mickelson is a nice guy. He just doesn't seem to recognize that the game of golf has been very good to him. He also doesn't seem to recognize that this system of taxation that we have developed in the United States, has work usually in his favor.
