all semi-automatic firearms the only practical way to accomplish your goal is reduced magazine capacity and requiring some mechanism (ideally a retrofitable mechanism) to block "oversize" magazines and slow magazine exchange (which I've proposed in another comment that was . . . ignored).

You are going to encounter some resistance from all the Glock and Sig owners, though . . . and banning rifles won't accomplish much unless you go after the high capacity/high rate of fire pistols as well.  The kid in Newtown was equipped with both . . . and would have been just as lethal with the pistols had he not had the rifle . . .

    •  I considered exempting all non-auto pistols (0+ / 0-)

because you would really, really have to bottleneck your targets to accurately hit them with a handgun popping off at a high rate, especially with a magazine restriction, which I'm not sure you noticed was in my diary.

I see what you did there.

with a 10 round magazine capacity limit for all guns.  People who's gun fantasies include protracted firefights are generally not stable enough to own guns at all.  Better they just take up paintball a a hobby.

The problem is how to deal with a) criminals and b) crazies.  They will abuse firearms regardless, and find ways to get whatever is prohibited to facilitate that abuse.  So whatever regulation there is requires penalties sufficient to motivate the rational to conform and to get the rest in cages/treatment where they belong.

        •  This is precisely what I've been saying. (0+ / 0-)

Like drunk driving penalties need to severe enough AND enforced.
