    doesn't run the FBI database.

the purpose of the second amendment is to promote a well-regulated militia, in the same sense that the purpose of the first amendment is to promote a well-informed electorate.

    •  But they made sure nobody else could use it (12+ / 0-)

Except law enforcement investigating gun crimes only in their own jurisdictions. So if a cop from City A wants to see how many guns were used in crimes that were bought within 25 miles of A, too bad. He can only look at gun stores IN City A, and only relevant to the specific case under investigation.

So if Gun Store B has sold guns used in 77% of all crimes in City A, but B is in City C, nothing the police can do.  NOTHING.  The good news is they won't know about it.

      Thanks, NRA!

      •  that has nothing to do (0+ / 0-)

with the background checks that seem to have failed here.

There are dozens of roadblocks laid all over the place by the wonderful people from the NRA.  They must have put them in because they were worried about all those law enforcement personnel getting in each others' way.  How considerate of them!

but everything they're guilty of does not justify making up similar accusations that happen to be false.

            •  You're DEFENDING the NRA. (2+ / 0-)

I want to be sure I'm reading you correctly, here.  You're defending the lobby for weapons manufacturers, who have inordinate say in what national and state laws affecting guns, ammunition, modifications, and research into same are proposed, written, and passed, despite the the opinions of their own supposed membership.

              •  The NRA does a lot of rotten things (0+ / 0-)

but I don't see the point of claiming that they're behind the lack of access to mental health data.  They actually supported a law encouraging states to pass on more relevant mental health records.

NRA called it a win, and here's what gun control group MAIG says about it:

The number of records entered into NICS
has increased significantly since the law was signed in January 2008. As of December 2010, NICS officials were able to access nearly 70 million records when conducting a background check, including more than 1.1 million records identifying people who are prohibited for
                reasons of mental health.
By October 2011, the number of mental health records in the NICS database had risen to more than 1.3 million.
As the number of records in NICS has increased, so has the number of attempted firearms purchases that have been denied because of the mental health status of the
buyer. In 2006, for example, only 405 gun sales were declined for mental health reasons; in 2010, that number increased to 6,103.

the purpose of the second amendment is to promote a well-regulated militia, in the same sense that the purpose of the first amendment is to promote a well-informed electorate.
