    they perhaps could be if students took them seriously, but the teachers at Garfield HS note pointedly that the students do not.

      We have standardized tests in Michigan where the accountability is for everyone but the student.

      Why should they care to do their best on the test?

      If the test is used properly as a diagnostic tool for helping the student achieve (which it was designed to do) instead of a cudgel for the teachers and school systems, students may be more inclined to use it and try their best.

      But students have now caught on that they can play the game too.  There is no incentive to them to do well on the test, so they have no reason to try.
