if the party moved to the left. If the party needs to be center-right in order to win then we're screwed, in terms of policy.

I want to point out that there's a difference between moving to the left and becoming the political arm of SDS, which is, I think, what you're asking about in reference to the tea party. Tea partiers are extreme crazies. I'm not asking the Democrats to become bomb throwers. I'd just like the party to say unequivocally that social security is good. That unions are good. That poor people need help. That rich people should be willing to be rich instead of mega-rich.

If that sort of thing loses elections then we're in big trouble. And if, in order to win elections, the Democrats have to be like the Republicans used to be, then what's the point of being a Democrat?

Winning an election is worthless unless the right policies follow.

that doesn't represent you?  There is no win possible.  But then I come from where you can both move the party left AND win elections.  I think more people should have the confidence to not believe that is impossible.

Which is the point of this yet-another-third-party-dream diary.

Want a multi-party political system? You have two choices:

        1) Trigger a Constitutional Convention. Get a new Constitution in to replace the existing system of government, because the existing Constitution sets up rules that funnel events towards a two-party system.

        2) move to a different country.

Absent 1 or 2, talk about a 3rd party is nothing more than a bunch of wishful thinking.

If the winner doesn't represent your ideals?
