  •  I would still rather see renewables generated (14+ / 0-)

closer to the point of use.  You can get a pretty good amount of solar in an urban area, and a whole lot in a suburban area (cover the tops of malls and their parking spaces with solar panels, for a start...)  But since utility companies can't make money on that in the same way they can with large installations, it doesn't happen.  In the meantime, we're chewing up a lot of land that helps a lot of wildlife continue to exist.  And of course, we're chewing up a lot of birds.  One of the arguments in favor of locally generated power is that you don't have so much line loss, so this helps justify the large, remote installations, alas.

Don't get me wrong - I would still rather see our energy come from renewables rather than fossil fuels, even with these issues.  It's just that I don't think we're focussing enough attention on doing the renewable power as sustainably as possible.  Reducing line loss does make it more efficient, so maybe they won't need to cover as many acres or chop as many birds to get the power we need.

And of course, the best thing of all would be to reduce consumption.  But that's a topic for another day.
