  •  He's a lyin' sonuvabitch. AT&T has for the last (7+ / 0-)

decade and a half been actively squeezing anyone beyond 50-55 out the door, both management and non-management.
As most other corporations also do today.
If they succeed in all this 'raise the ages, cut the benefits/wages/etc' crap, local governments are going to need a new type 'solid waste disposal' group to daily pick up the bodies in the streets and countrysides. (I write this as someone who has stepped around such bodies in third world places)

said Randall Stephenson, chairman and chief executive of AT&T Inc. “We are going to need our employees to work longer just to fill the needs that we have in the work force.”

He can do that now because there are a surplus of workers.  As the baby boom retires that will change and he knows it.   Workers are like any raw material to these guys.  When there is too much supply the price drops and you can pick and choose.   That is what has been going on the last decade and cutting older more expensive long-time employees is just part of the game they play to cut costs.  But when the supply goes down, they won't be able to do this any more.  Upping the retirement age helps them solve this problem. That and in the end they will need the workers.

The difficulty lies not so much in developing new ideas as in escaping from old ones! - John Maynard Keynes
