    Who fall for pseudo science like astrology, or fell for Uri Geller, or read something like Barry Fell and were completely convinced.  Having a college degree doesn't necessarily mean knowing anything useful about science, or having a lick of common sense.

    Interesting about 1899 book about smoking and cancer - do you recall the title?
