that our diplomat missions are a sham for something else and not put good men and women in danger doing a thankless job, that we know is bullshit,  no wonder people hate us.  The State Department Budget is less than 1% of the total......it is probably less than the Pentagon spends on parking in a given year.

You are spouting nonsense. Our diplomatic staff does diplomatic work and is not just a nest of spies as you seem to want to make out. The pros put their safety and lives on the line in all sorts of nasty trouble spots to try to mitigate situations. We probably have some at risk in Mali right now and they are not working to screw the people of Mali. Get your own "big boy/girl pants on" and learn a bit about how things are in the world. The "bullshit" is coming from you!

Throughout history diplomats have worked for the interest of their countries and often for mutual interest of theirs and the host countries. That is still the case. At the same time, intelligence gathering—and that is not a "dirty little secret"—has been a part of diplomatic representation. Every embassy in Washington, including our closest allies, has some form of that embedded. Our intel people meet with theirs with full knowledge that there are also some purely self interested national interests within those staffs as well. Some others have hostile intent and we know it.

      •  You look at the history of this country and what (0+ / 0-)

the CIA has done in our name.  Your the one that lives in the fantasy world.  The intelligence operation in Benghazi made that site the target of the attack and the Ambassador got caught in the crossfire...they just won't say that.

    •  They aren't a sham. They do diplomatic work (1+ / 0-)

By the same token, like every other country in the world, they also include some intelligence personnel.  This is not some dirty little secret of the United States.  They is how business is done across the world for all countries.

      •  The basic ignorance here, on a site of people in (0+ / 0-)

to politics, government and international affairs, is astounding. It is as if how laws pass, the workings of our constitutional system, every aspect of our government were "highly classified" and unobtainable by average citizens. At least it is more excusable here than in sitting Congress members, but then look at where they are coming from now and who votes for them. These are not secrets. Every citizen should have a fair idea of how things work.

People here and apparently Congress wonder why we didn't have a strong force of U.S. Marines. Lemme see. China and Pakistan, the later with some reality based fears about our brand of Muslim hater, notify us they are sending a combat armed company or two of their finest combat troops to Washington or the San Francisco consulate so that they can blast anyone they find to be a threat to their sovereign diplomatic grounds. Response?

Diplomatic stations gather, as well as sometimes share intelligence, on host countries. Wanna bet the Swiss don't have people poking around trying to find out what may be happening on our policies about "secret" bank accounts? I would not. It is like expecting a table of poker players not to be very alert and trying to scope out tells and what hands the others have—and you'd better believe anyone but closest buddy poker players finding they can see something about a hand someone else holds in a reflection in a glass wouldn't cast glances that way.

FYI State has its own intel group, the Bureau of Intelligence and Research that used to be highly regarded.
