    The North Vietnamese offered McCain the chance to go home. He declined unless all POWs captured before him went home, too; US military protocol was to insist on first-captured, first-released. The North Vietnamese refused to release everybody else, of course, and McCain remained a prisoner for years longer.

    I agree McCain ran a terrible 2008 campaign, and I voted against him and for Obama quite enthusiastically. But his modern failings don't mean he never was a hero.
