Nothing says you have to try for a kill shot.  Shoot off to the side, shoot low, whatever?  Heck, even if you feel you have to shoot someone, I think they're going to be far less likely to be able to do anything to you after you've shot them in the leg, even.

Will tell you that if you are going to fire, you better fire to  hit something.   There are a couple reasons for this.   First, if you fire a shot at nothing, or especially at a hard ground surface, your action is very likely to invoke the "fight or flight" instinct.   Some will run, but quite a large number of people who may not have otherwise will feel immediately compelled to either fire their weapon or to fight for their life with whatever means they have.   So if you fire at nothing, count on someone firing back -at- something, even if they never at any point had any intent of killing someone to begin with.

The second reason is more practical: if you fire at 'nothing' you may end up accidentally hurting or seriously injuring someone you didn't mean to.

    •  Warning shots get you jailed (0+ / 0-)

There was a woman that did that, and ended up in jail for 20 years.

      It's really stacked against women.
