    It's the statement of:

call the police, call your lawyer, give a statement, go home, and sleep like a baby
This is a very glossy way to look at a problem.   And unrealistic.   Even in the most just of shootings, it's unlikely you go home and 'sleep like a baby'.   It is far more likely that you will go home, cry, panic, maybe vomit.  Your entire world has changed.   You'll need a lawyer.  You will be living somewhere that someone died violently if it happened in your house, or if it happened elsewhere you will not go home in a hurry.

What I'm really trying to get at with this is that we all too often make it seem as though pulling that trigger and making that choice leaves not a lot to think about after the fact.   I'm saying for a very long time, it will be a lot of what you think about.  You're going to replay that moment in your head often.

    •  I think the writer meant (0+ / 0-)

"Try to sleep like a baby".

    •  I always interpreted it as being figuratively (0+ / 0-)

as in understand that you did everything in your power to avoid the situation and were left with an unthinkable choice.

The quote also speaks to what I think is a common misconception about how most honest people who have chosen to carry view their responsibility.  You no longer have the option of being a hothead because of where the consequences could lead.  As someone said above, guns are either to intimidate or kill.  For the lawful citizen, the first is not an option.
