  •  Benghazi was the only branch on the cliff face (7+ / 0-)

The Republicans grasped the Benghazi attack as a way to damage President Obama during his own election because, heck, what else did they have? I agree entirely. It was a weak attack on PBO. But it happened during his campaign so it is hard to conclude the GOP's motivation here was to get at Hillary Clinton.

    •  No, I think they saw it as a twofer. (9+ / 0-)

Now it is just a "onefer": Kill Hill's chances in 2016. They know she is a threat, even if they gerrymander every state and fuck with the electoral college. She could win and they know it. This will make it harder for her to win, along with her health issue.  These are power mad thugs.

      •  I seriously doubt that was on Gov Romney's mind (0+ / 0-)

It was Gov Romney who got the GOP involved with Benghazi as an issue. Had it worked it'd have been President Romney running for re-election in 2016. So I don't think twofer was part of the plan.

Now that the GOP has to run out the clock on this ploy, in order to pretend they were sincere in the first place, if some soil sticks to the SoS so much the better. But I don't think the GOP honestly feels Benghazi is going to do much of anything to anyone's reputation.

It was a plot to get at President Obama, it failed, and now the GOP is just going through the motions.

    •  Do not forget that hysterical press conference by (5+ / 0-)

Romney the morning after that he thought would be such a foreign policy coup.  He was mystified when the adults in the press wrote that he was being a hysterical amateur at a time that the nation needed a statesman.
