People say "never ever" right before they change their minds. When all logic has failed, then people resort to emotional "never ever" which actually indicates that they are at a tipping point. At this point, I usually tell them a story about someone who had the courage to change their mind and stand up to their friends. Or I just go ahead and make my persuasion for the "never ever". "Never ever" is just an emotional defense, not an indicator of not open to persuasion. I say this as a long time doorknocker and persuader for many convention campaigns with a limited number of people.
