  •  I have two very bright daughters, (14+ / 0-)

one a college sophomore (physics major) and one a senior in high school.  The high schooler, who is a National Merit Scholar, top 5% of her class, etc., was upset recently by a conversation among her friends (she wasn't there, and was told about it later).

The friends, a close group of both boys & girls, were talking about prom dates, and about who my daughter would go with, as a friend, since she's not dating anyone.  One of her girlfriends said, "Jane really needs to stop being so independent all the time if she ever wants to get a boyfriend or a husband!"

My daughter is used to hearing that stuff from guys, but she was really upset to hear it from one of the girls, who she thought was also pretty independent & on the same page.  WTF, girls????  I've always encouraged my girls never to "dumb it down" for any reason, and we talk about some of their girlfriends who are already planning their weddings (they are only 17), and why they are so unambitious, even though they are bright and do well in school.  I was kind of an oddball myself back in high school, for the same reasons.  I had hoped things would be better for my girls.

At least they are encouraged to take the hard classes in school, and both do well in math & science.  I've also told them they will attract a better quality of guy, who appreciates smart, independent women!  There just aren't that many of those ;-)
