    Even if you get past the obvious and/or subtle bias in training settings, it continues into professional settings as well.  As a female scientist, you have to develop the hide of a rhino to tolerate the attitudes.  It can be a no win situation...if you are excellent they hate you.  If you try to get along, you are not good enough to rise up.  So, it can be a no win situation.  I have mentored dozens of female students who told me they did not think they could remain "themselves" and still be scientists.  I told them that is silly and just an outgrowth of the fact that most stereotypes of scientists are male.  But, you really have to be willing to navigate weird reactions to your female presence to be a scientist.  Yes, even in 2013.
