    (keeping in mind that girls have great representation in biology and medicine, where the math is introduced later) we need to be careful not to see grade-school math encouragement as a cure-all for women's underrepresentation in science and engineering.

    From the Title IX website:

    Women receive 47% of bachelor's degrees in mathematics and 40% of bachelor's degrees in physical sciences; however, women are awarded only 25% of doctorate degrees in each of these areas.
    In engineering, women receive only 18% of bachelor's degrees, 21% of master's degrees, and 12% of doctorate degrees.
    There is clearly something on in engineering at the early undergraduate level and in physical science and mathematics at the late undergraduate/early graduate level that is filtering out women who, up to that point, did have strong math skills and confidence.
