use the full name of an agency/group with the letters which are going to be used as an abbreviation in caps.  Then you can use the abbreviation thereafter.

    Jet Propulsion Lab  =   JPL

I just asked Mr P - a physicist - out of the blue, what JPL was and he didn't know without context.

LtPowers, please remember no honest questions should be put down. IMO. (In My Opinion)

I don't believe I suggested that any honest questions should be put down.  What honest question do you think I'm disparaging?

The JPL is almost as well known as NASA.  Would you expect "National Aeronautics and Space Administration" to be specified if the piece had referred to NASA?

Look up JPL in google, and then look up NASA in google. The latter has more than ten times as many hits, and many of the hits for the former aren't even for the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

If you really think that JPL is even within an order of magnitude of NASA, recognition-wise, by the man on the street, then you're living in a very select community, and with extreme blinders on. (But I am forced to suspect that you don't, and are just arguing for the sake of arguing.)

        •  I have two coffee mugs with JPL on them (0+ / 0-)

one red, and one green. I guess I am in that very select community of ex-science teachers, although I don't do presentations. I must admit, though, I've known of NASA a lot longer than I've known of JPL.

          •  WOW!!! I have a pot holder from NASA! (0+ / 0-)

            ...... snort!..........

Some of us remember a time before NASA!
Both agencies had their nests established before we were hatched.

            Cue:  Eye roll!

Enjoy your coffee, tea or hot chocolate in your special mugs ...... :-)

            •  How cool! (0+ / 0-)

Unfortunately, the JPL shop we visited during the tour offered to local area science teachers mainly sold JPL labled stuff that might be used in an office setting: coffee mugs, lanyards, id card holders, note pad folders, pens, pencils, paperweights, umbrellas and shot glasses (!). No pot holders, or I'm sure I would have bought one or two.

I do hope those involontary facial tics don't cause you too much trouble... I'm enjoying a nice cappacino in my red JPL mug today. ;^)

              Cheers!

        •  I don't know (0+ / 0-)

I don't know, and that's rather the point.  You're taking it as an article of faith that JPL is virtually unknown to the world at large, and I'm just challenging that assertion, for which you've provided no evidence.

(Google hits don't count; the "number of results" is notoriously unreliable.)
