    you could say progress depends on the very "purity" you decry, the people to whom no real-world political outcome is ever good enough, and who are relentlessly pushing for more. And I would be last one to minimize pain felt by progressives who actually felt a personal stake in a certain outcome, e.g., if they had devised an online petition for a particular outcome and had organized volunteers to phone-bank for it, only to see Dems compromise it away.

    On the other hand, lately I've been really impatient with "purity," as vital to the progressive discourse as I recognize it to be.
