but it's weak sauce for Lautenberg.  It would be a shame to see him go out this way.  Bow out gracefully and be remembered as a good senator or continue on this fools errand and be remembered as a grumpy old man clinging onto power.  It's time Frank.  Enjoy your retirement.

But he might not, especially in a three- or four-way.

there may be a couple of Senate opportunities in New Jersey.

He's single.  He could claim he thought the women were over 18yo.  The rest becomes a Vitter story, he was just re-elected so ride it out. What Vitter did was illegal, and he's married.  So the GOP really don't have a leg to stand on to attack, barring the girls were knowingly underage.

The Dems should remove him from being chairman of Foreign Relations - but I bet he'd threaten to resign if they tried it - which would mean Christie would name his replacement, and thus a Republican.

But it's going to be difficult to get Democrats to stand behind him once the GOP starts making a stink. We're talking about underage girls after all. On top of that, there are going to be Senate ethics hearings on the matter of who paid for the flights to the DR and why they weren't disclosed prior to the trips.

            •  Not so difficult (0+ / 0-)

Rush Limpdick did the same thing only he took a bunch of Viagra and engaged with sex with underage prostitutes on purpose.

The sex scandals run deep in the GOP so they would really be opening up themselves to having a few glass panes broken on their houses as well

He would have been forced to resign in disgrace. I mean, this isn't about playing footsies under the bathroom stall or texting a dick pic. It's about having sex with underage girls. And I don't care what letter someone has next to their name. Exploiting young women is wrong.

But regardless, the Senator is bound by the US laws, even when he travels abroad.

{Chapter 117, 18 U.S.C. 2423(b)} forbids traveling in interstate or foreign commerce to engage in "illicit sexual conduct" with a minor. 2423(f) refers to Chapter 109A as its bright line for defining "illicit sexual conduct", as far as non-commercial sexual activity is concerned. For the purposes of age of consent, the only provision applicable is {Chapter 109A, 18 U.S.C. 2243(a)}. 2243(a) refers to situations where such younger person is under the age of 16 years, has attained 12 years of age, and the older person is more than 4 years older than the 12-to-15-year-old (persons under 12 are handled under 18 U.S.C. 2241(c) under aggravated sexual abuse). So, the age is 12 years if one is within 4 years of the 12-to-15-year-old's age, 16 under all other circumstances. This most likely reflects Congressional intent to not unduly interfere with a state's age of consent law, which would have been the case if the age was set to 18 under all circumstances. This law is also extraterritorial in nature to U.S. Citizens and Residents who travel outside of the United States.

However, the age of consent in the DR is 18. Therefore, if Menendez had sex with someone under 18, he committed a crime.

I personally believe in the "half your age plus seven" rule.

So a 58-year-old guy like Menendez shouldn't be "dating" anyone under 36.

Of course, that's just my opinion. :-)

        •  What is the new information? (0+ / 0-)

It's come out that he really did have sex with prostitutes, and now that they're underage? Is this just a rumor, or does there seem to be substance to it? A link or specific citation would be welcome.

Obama should offer Sen Lautenberg a nice spot on some board like at Amtrak, or as Ambassador to Luxembourg, or something.

"Retirement" must look pretty bleak to an active guy like him, so give him something sort of useful to do instead.
