  •  Third parties are un-American, aren't they? (2+ / 0-)

One summer when I was in high school, I was selected for the American Legion-sponsored Boys State program at Cornell. (This is the same program in which Bill Cinton was such a star he got to meet JFK - I wasn't any kind of star at all)

The idea was that this would introduce promising young men to real democracy in action. The way it worked was we counted off odds/evens which determined whether we were to play little Democrats or little Republicans - and then campaigned and elected legislators, governors, congressmen and a president. Everybody ended up being some kind of pretend elected official. Nice for kids, huh?

But what I remember most clearly is the old old American Legion guy who began to rant and rave when somebody (not me) talked about creating a third party. That was the one unforgiveable offense that coud get you sent home in disgrace.

That, of course, really was the best introduction to American democracy. You get to be in only one of two parties, more or less at random, and you better not ever even think about a third alternative.

If my soldiers were to begin to think, not one would remain in the ranks. -Frederick the Great
