  •  OPOL, thanks for this food for thought (9+ / 0-)

It's relationships that matter and make life worth living.

A story:  an old friend of mine--"Jen"--went on a canoe trip with friends in her 20s. The canoe capsized in a particularly knarly stretch of water, and she was trapped under water....she died.  When she died, she said she saw herself from above as her then husband dragged her from the water and tried to resuscitate her...She saw the desperation in him and her friends when they tried to revive her, and their sorrow when they couldn't.  She then saw her funeral and her husband and family crying over her grave.  A loving presence surrounded her as she watched, ministering to her.  She came back from death with one clear thought and a knowingness that the only thing--the only thing--that matters is the love one gives and receives to and from others.  Nothing else is important.

She told me that story over 20 years ago, and to this day I still think about the message---indeed, it has become one of my mantras.

Blessings to you, friend, and to all the friends and loved ones we have known and will know.
