  •  Boeing (5+ / 0-)

Boeing had an outsourcing/supply chain chart that Rube Goldberg would have called complicated.

Boeing's problems started at the top as the top had no experience building airplanes.  I realize many of the "masters of the universe" think they're omnipotent, but the fact is they didn't know crap about the product they were building.

Boeing upper management tanked this aircraft.

    •  This is a real tragedy. (6+ / 0-)

Boeing had traditionally been one of the Truly Great (American) companies -- and one of the few companies still making things in the US that we could export to the rest of the world.

    •  There's more to it than just a battery. (2+ / 0-)

The rampant outsourcing is stupid, yes, but there's a lot more to it than the Dreamliner fiasco. In outsourcing critical parts of their planes, they've given away their engineering (e.g. intellectual property) to other countries. The short-sighted management decisions have compromised Boeing's competitive advantage in many more ways than just a battery that catches on fire.
