  •  It didn't have a master plan for curbing costs (5+ / 0-)

Instead what it offered was a way to reform the health care system itself by creating pilot programs.

This was not a bad idea and in fact there is some record of success in the way the USDA was transformed from a fragmented and disorganized mess into a program that taught farmers how to farm better and reduce the high prices of food.

In 1900, more than 40% of a family income went to paying for food. We spend less today and the quality of food has gone up.

There was never a real attempt to educate the public on how and why the health care system needed to change because the politicians were too busy trying to sink Obama's boat.

The most informative analysis of the health care system and the reform bill was done by Dr.Atul Gawande. I bet most people have never heard of him.

Dr. Gawande wrote a series of articles in The New Yorker magazine that helped me to understand what needed to be done to create real reform that would bring about savings through more efficient care. There is tremendous waste in health care today. The public option is not the only way we should do this.

If you are interested. "The Cost Conundrum", June 1,2009, is his first article. There are others in the magazine as well. "The Hot Spotter" is very focused on the waste in health care. Worth the time to read.
You will have a greater understanding of the complexity of the problems in health care.

    •  Thanks for the Gawande reference. As to this: (3+ / 0-)

Obama and his administration failed miserably in educating people about the health care system's problems, particularly with regard to insurance, and about what they were proposing.  It was a disaster that the Tea Party lunatics and Republicans took over that educational role and Obama is directly responsible for it.
