he could maybe get the DU ammunition (not exactly surplus, more gray-market type thing). he'd have to either know or be a machinist to convert either a '15 or a 50-cal to full-auto.

In 12 years of home care, I ran into a fair number of individuals who had learned skills at mastery level without any formal training. The undercover agents were apparently shown some stuff. The raid was finished by late afternoon. He had a wife and kid, may well have been very careful with storage. Which would make collecting it to remove easier. Or some of it wasn't as much as he bragged.

I think it could be a goldmine of info if he really had a lot of illegal stuff. Depends on whether he kept any records - receipts, packaging- that would lead them to his sources. It will be great if they release everything that doesn't endanger follow up investigations. Just because I think most Americans don't really believe there are people this determined out there. If they did, we might get some kind of AWB + buyback + sunset law for getting rid of banned arms in possession (no inheritance or transfer). And more ATF to find characters like this.

    •  Anyone with the skills... (0+ / 0-)

to successfully build an IED of the kinds described has the skills necessary to convert an AR-15 to fully automatic. It's not actually that hard if you know what you're doing and have a decent workshop.

The .50 rifle, on the other hand, is almost certainly not convertible. The kinds that civilians can get their hands on are almost entirely bolt-action (and thus not convertible to automatic no matter what), with the exception of two types that I know of: the Barrett M107A1 (and its older model, the M82A1) and the Alexander Arms .50 Beowulf. The Barrett is a long-range semi-automatic rifle using the .50 BMG cartridge and has no manufactured automatic version. I haven't handled one myself, but I'd bet (given the size and power of the cartridge) that it would be almost impossible to convert it and likely to blow itself to pieces from the stress of firing even if someone figured it out.

The Beowulf, on the other hand, just might be convertible, given that it's based almost entirely on the AR-15 platform and presumably has the same firing mechanism. Since it fires a cartridge based on the .50 Action Express (the kind used in the .50 Desert Eagle semi-auto pistol) it's only a medium velocity rifle for relatively short range and might be able to stand the stress of automatic fire. You'd need to be half-crazy to try it, but I think that the suspect in this case might qualify for that designation. Unlike most .50 rifles, which are made for extremely long-range shooting, the Beowulf is made for close-to-medium-range stopping power; thus the heavy-weight bullet at medium velocity that it fires. It will doubtless become a favorite of these anti-government nuts, since one of its most touted characteristics (by its manufacturer, no less) is that it can easily penetrate most body armor.

      •  the '15 basically needs a new sear (0+ / 0-)

in the lower receiver, and a (stronger, slightly differently machined) sear pin to control it correctly.
