  •  O' did some fairly impressive stuff (10+ / 0-)

when he was in IL Senate, didn't he? Mandatory taping of police interrogations comes to mind.

    •  He did. (8+ / 0-)

He also sponsored major campaign finance reform, a few bills dealing with poverty, he passed several health care bills, a racial profiling law, and had a focus on the environment (which was unusual for black legislators from Chicago at the time).

I was familiar with his record before he became a U.S. Senator, so that's probably why the people who claim Obama is secretly a third-way sell-out trying to betray the left have always sounded off base to me. It doesn't fit the pattern of his actions at any point in his career. He did work with ACORN, even though he was never employed by them, sued to protect voting rights, and his first favorable press coverage was in the socialist paper on Chicago's south side. His views have obviously changed over time but he's the first American President to come from an activist, left-wing movement background.

at that point in time (2008) there was nowhere a Democratic president could govern this country BUT from the center...and good luck if he/she could hold it.

Good on him for doing so! Hopes for a 2nd term leftward shift as indicated in his (upper case) Inauguration Speech. Hopeful about term #2. We can't let "them" forget that he/we won.
