    and it has some basis in my view, that the 2nd Amendment (not guns per se) was a compromise to allow slave owners to maintain militia groups to prevent slave uprising.  This view suggests that this was the main reason for the 2nd Amendment.  My sense that while this was likely a feature of the impetus behind backing the 2nd it wasn't the main or even a vital reason.  I am not a Constitutional expert nor a historian but there are roots for the right to bear arms in English rights.  And we had just finished revolting against our country so it makes sense to me that there we be some desire to maintain a ready group of arms bearing citizens for protection. SO I seriously doubt that the 2nd Amendment was written so we can have a force to keep the slaves at bay.

    That said, I do believe that more than a few of the slave owning signers thought "oh and it would help protect us in case the slaves get too uppity".
