  •  It reminds me of the WASPS,civilian women who flew (11+ / 0-)

shuttle planes over to England during WWII, among other things.

During the last part of the journey, they could have been subject to attack by the Luftwaffe. So they asked that their planes be armed

    Nope. "No guns for you!"

I don't know if any got shot down, but they were damn helpless targets.  I don't think I'd like to rely on the enemy being "gentlemen." Not if my life was at stake.

By the way, of the more than 1000 WASPS, 38 died during the war. I don't know if any of these were shot down.

The whole program was kept classified for years. No one wanted to let people know that when they looked up and saw military aircraft flying overhead, the pilots just might have been women.

Freedom has two enemies: Those who want to control everyone around them...and those who feel no need to control themselves.

    •  The Russians were not so stupid. (7+ / 0-)

Several of the top Russian aces during WW-II were women.

I recall reading that one of the A-10 pilots who almost got Saddam in a targeted strike was a woman USAF Captain.

And of course there is Maj. Tammy Duckworth, who of course never saw actual combat because it was against the rules < snark >.
