  •  IA-01 is a strong Democratic district (2+ / 0-)

It's not "safe" by any stretch, but there are a lot of good Democratic options there.  I've already seen state Senator Liz Mathis touted today, and Iowa still hasn't elected a woman to Congress.  There are other good options, too.  It's just a tough seat for Republicans.

I would love if we have Steve King as the GOP nominee, in which case we win the Senate race easily and have some kind of shot at a pickup.  Of course Latham running would be even better, IA-03 is a true tossup as an open seat.

We have good options for candidates in every district, given that there are some strong Democratic areas in every district.

    •  Why would Latham running be good? (0+ / 0-)

Do you think Braley (who ought to run) could beat him and make it tilt D?

      •  Yes Braley can beat Latham (1+ / 0-)

There's nothing special about Latham, he's a guy who just keeps his head down, does the little things right, and stays even-tempered.  He's like Frank Wolf that way.  But that also means he has no profile statewide and would have to lay a lot of groundwork, there's no foundational reputation statewide to build on.

Braley vs. Latham would be a tossup out of the gate, and ultimately the candidates and campaigns would decide the outcome, absent a national wave.

And yes IA-03 is winnable if Latham retires, but I wouldn't call it "tilt D," I'd say pure tossup out of the gate...again, candidates and campaigns matter greatly.
