  •  The irony of this battle is... (7+ / 0-)

the DOD doesn't usually micro-manage these clubs memberships, they operate independently of the DOD. The DOD does have the power of the purse, in that Fort Bragg is one of many that is hosted on a military base. Threatening to end that, as the Marines have done, presents a very serious problem for the club.

But this saga has drawn attention to a host of other ways the DOD can make like easier for same-sex partners of servicemembers, even as DOMA is still law. And the fact that same-sex spouses deserve, and are at times denied, the support of the brass.

I'm actually optimistic we'll see the DOD move on things like spouse ID cards and other equitable privileges that are still in the discretionary power of the DOD, but remain unresolved.

So, yeah, I do believe this issue does have the Commander in Chief's attention and Hagel may move on it fairly quickly, like by this summer.

If only because this popular vote coming out of Fort Bragg is a powerful statement that the military is ready and supportive to include the spouses as a part of the community and leadership better get onboard.

The Marines did and it really only drew praise.

The Marines typically solve nuanced, complicated social issues in the time it takes the Army to properly tie its boots.

After the repeal of DADT, the Commandant of the Marine Corps was the first senior military leader to publicly admit that the repeal did not have the mission-degrading effect he expected, that his analysis was wrong, and that he had no reservations with the current policy.  Total pragmatism, zero ideology, and 100% commitment to the mission.

repeal went through, that the Corp would lead the way.

That's what a real Marine does.  That's the integrity that Marine officers are taught.
