  •  About your current financial accounts (5+ / 0-)

You should open new accounts at a different financial institution. I’m going to use the term “banks” as a generic term, but credit unions are my preferred financial institution. Credit unions generally have low minimums for starting new accounts and no/low fees. Get Temporary checks printed on your new checking account and be sure to tell them to mail your new checks to your PO box.

To protect your NEW “bank” account, you should tell the person opening up the account, that you want ALL transactions to require a either a password or proof of your identity.

You should immediately change any direct deposits to your new “bank” account.

You should seriously consider closing any joint “bank” accounts, plus you should also close any sole accounts (sole accounts = in your name only) at your old “bank"

You should close all joint “bank" accounts because you don’t want your name in those account if/whens she starts writing bad checks. Most “banks" won’t let you take your name off of a joint account. If that is the case with your “bank", then you will have to close the joint account.

You don’t want to leave open any sole accounts at the old “bank” because a teller may mistakenly tell your wife information about your sole accounts that she has no right to know.

You can close the joint “bank” accounts even if there is money in them. I don’t know if you are legally obligated to give any of it to your wife; that is a question you should ask your attorney.

Personally, I would close any joint service accounts that have my name on them or sole accounts. I’m talking about telephone accounts, cable accounts, etc. You don’t want to be held liable for your wife racking up a bunch of unpaid bills.

Credit cards too.  And change the online passwords.  SHC, do you know if opening new accounts, even solo, will be complicated by WI being a community property state? I'm unclear on that....getting my own account is the first thing I did, but my divorce itself was in MN even though all the custody court stuff happened here. Asking about WI community property laws at the new bank might be important.  On the other hand this could work both ways, and limit what the wife is able to do to the joint accounts too.
