  •  I've been there... (11+ / 0-)

I had visited my parents in New Mexico and was driving back home and decided to take a detour just to see this National Park - it was well worth it.  Because of the desert landscape, the camping is not the greatest of all the National Parks but I was able to find a place and spent two days there.  I took the driving tour and hiked around a bit.  Not a lot of people around, but definitely one of my favorite national parks!

your comment, Viceroy. I'm thinking you had to be in Arches early spring or late fall, because these years the park is quite popular with tourists. . .especially our overseas guests. Lucky you, though, for less people traffic. When hiking, it's just nice to get away from the maddening crowd, especially trekking in the backcountry. I think Arches has one of the best, if not the best, Visitor Centers. Very informative. The NPS went well beyond the usual given the displays and layout of that gorgeous dwelling. (Petrified Forest's NP VC is also excellent.)

      •  Actually, it was late July... (10+ / 0-)

and it was virtually deserted - I didn't see a car for miles and miles.  And the campground had virtually no one there - I barely spoke to a soul.  Quite a change from Yellowstone, Yosemite or the Grand Canyon - more like Big Bend.  That's one of the reasons I liked it so much.  This was probably late 80's or early 90's, when I was much younger and a dedicated camper/hiker/trekker; now, I'd probably stay in Moab in an air conditioned motel.  If it's gotten crowded, that's too bad!
