     Even before the Apollo 1 loss, an earlier tragedy, also in February(1966), took the lives of astronauts Elliot See and Charles Bassett when their T-38 crashed in St Louis less than 150 feet from the Gemini 9 capsule in which they were scheduled to fly.  Their aircraft crashed into the McDonnell Aircraft building at Lambert Field, where the Gemini 9 capsule was being finished.
