  •  I'm an inattentive-ADHD fidgetter. (5+ / 0-)

Doodler of Sunday bulletins since they first trusted me in a pew.

    Prayer beads. Seriously.

Started using the things recently, and wow.

It's a fidget toy you're SUPPOSED to fiddle with.

In the case of Christian prayer beads, there's usually a set of repetitive prayers you're supposed to use and there are ways to substitute others if you have issues with the ones a prayer bead pattern is supposed to be used with, and if it's not a strand of the same size bead there's usually something specific you're SUPPOSED to let your mind wander about.

I would have skipped YEARS of trying to pray away ADD over in-sermon and in-group-prayer mental drifting if someone had just taught me the Jesus Prayer or the Lord's Prayer and told me to repeat it to myself if I started leaving mental topics appropriate to a church service. And of course, no one was going to let me PLAY with BEADS during a church service even if it would keep my hands moving.

(But no, my fellow Baptists often call that 'vain repetition', and my home church growing up disliked ritual prescriptive prayer enough that I was in my twenties before I learned the Lord's Prayer by heart -  on my own! The Lord's Prayer!)

Prayers and best wishes to those in Japan.

    •  The Lord's Prayer... (5+ / 0-)

is a great one to fall back on!

Our country can survive war, disease, and poverty... what it cannot do without is justice.

        the hardest time remembering.

I don't know if it's the two translations issue (debts v transgressions), the length, or the fact I've never heard it set to music that flowed right.

The Jesus Prayer is ancient, short, and easy. The version I've been using is "Lord Jesus, have mercy on me, a sinner."

I also seem to be able to remember prayers I've heard recited properly to music - 'Glory Be' and 'Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow' would be the two I'm most familiar with in that category.

I've been using the Jesus Prayer for small beads and the Lord's Prayer or Glory Be for the bigger ones.

Prayers and best wishes to those in Japan.
